Big Sleep Final

So I've finally submitted my project for the book cover unit. It was The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. A I mainly work with figurative pieces I also want to post the single items of my project.

I wanted to compose an action scene taken from a scene in the book were Marlowe the main character has to escape his captors whilst still handcuffed.

 Even though I didn't include the handcuffs in the illustration...

 Even though it is not necessary I uploaded Marlowe with a background...

 This was the first compisission I created with custome texture backgrounds.

 With a couple of alterations this was my second development stage.

 This was my final design, the title text was created by me and the Authors name and sub headings were the 'Hoefler Text' type face.

The Big Sleep: Slightly More Detailed Ideas

Having chosen a couple of ideas I preferred I then went on to refine the ideas.

I have since scrapped these ideas completely.

The Big Sleep Thumbnails

As a Uni project I have been assigned to design and illustrate a book cover for the book 'The Big Sleep'. Its a competition hosted by Penguin Book Publishers (competition link here). I am more inspired by the big sleep other than the puffing brief 'Wind In The Willows', but its been a struggle.

Here are some of my thumbnail sketches I've come up with as the first stages of my design process. 

I GOT A WACOM!

I recently started craving for a graphics tab, I knew what brands were best and knew Wacom were very accessible. So my only issue then was funding (being a student with no part-time job, money is AWAYS an issue). I sketched out this with the desire of it being painted in photoshop using a graphics tab.

The issue of funds for my dreams of a Wacom Bamboo (£49.99 RRP) still an obstruction I was doing the typical thing I'm sure we all do when lusting after something: dream, and to amazon wish list, drop hints, and everything else you could conceive short of prostitution! 

I then had an epiphany! I worked at a place almost 2 years ago where you got an Argos gift card for going above and beyond the job role, during my employment there I had accrued over £60 pounds for a multitude of extravagant reason (excluding kiss arse)... I never used these points even though 2 christmas' had past since leaving the job and accruing the points. Why didn't I use them before, goodness knows. But that meant I could suddenly afford the long lusted after WACOM BAMBOO!!

And after that long waffle and nonsense this was the result, enjoy :)

Tribute To Female Aviators

I was assigned a project to pay tribute to female aviators, I wanted to bring a sence of elegence and strength to the images.

During the project I learnt how to created brushes out of textures I had produced with paint.
